From The Mind of Merc - Adriana Smith

Time for June's Mind of Merc post.

Sometimes I find my mind wandering over various eclectic topics and occasionally I am inspired to write some of them down. Today I was thinking about Adriana Smith.

Apparently Handmaid’s Tale is no longer fiction. And, if you weren’t aware of this, here’s a brief rundown of the facts:
In February 2025, 30 year old Adriana Smith went to the hospital complaining of headaches.
She was given medication and sent home.
The following day, her boyfriend found her unable to breathe and called 911.
It was discovered she had blood clots on her brain and she was declared brain dead.
HOWEVER, at the time, Adriana was 9 weeks pregnant and because of her state’s anti-abortion law and the ‘detection of foetal cardiac activity’ Adriana was put on life support to allow the foetus to develop. This was against the wishes of her family.
In June 2025, Adriana’s baby was delivered (for which read removed from her body) at 6 months weighing 1 lb 13 oz.
And, as if that weren’t all terrible enough, here’s some additional facts to get your head around:

1)      The medical bills for keeping Adriana on ‘life support’ for all those months and delivering her baby? That went to the family – who had opposed it happening in the first place but been overruled.
2)      The reason the baby was delivered early? It wasn’t thriving INSIDE A CORPSE!!! Because that’s what Adriana’s body was at that stage – a corpse – and, guess what, a corpse can’t sustain a growing foetus – what a surprise!
3)      The baby, named Chance, is highly likely to “be blind, unable to walk or even struggle to survive because of the ‘complications’ of Adriana’s ‘health’”

We must be sick in the head as a society to think that is in anyway even vaguely acceptable.
